WHAT IS UFE?

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical, outpatient, minimally-invasive procedure for treating symptomatic uterine fibroids that can be done in an office environment in about 30-45 minutes. UFE treats all fibroids regardless of their size and location by cutting their blood supply. As fibroids die, they soften and shrink and don't cause symptoms any longer.

Compared to surgery, UFE is safer, less invasive, less expensive, and has a much shorter recovery.

WHAT to Expect from UFE

You will feel no pain during this 30-45 minute procedure. You will sleep comfortably during this time. Intravenous sedation is used. UFE is performed by an interventional radiologist like Dr. Lipman or Dr. Ermentrout from the Atlanta Fibroid Center®.

An interventional radiologist places a small catheter (tube) into the arteries that supply blood to the uterus. Once the catheter is in place, small particles are injected through the catheter into the network of arteries that supply each and every fibroid within the uterus blocking the flow of blood. The network of vessels supplying the uterus itself remains open, but the fibroids no longer have a blood supply. Over time, they shrink in size and eventually die off.

Our patients return home the same day after the procedure. The typical recovery time after UFE is 5-7 days. Statistically, 90% of women report a great improvement in fibroid symptoms or complete relief by the 3 month follow up visit. UFE allows women to keep their uterus while regaining their quality of life.
